Royal premiered film director Marcus Dillistone has designed a London Underground inspired art suite at the world famous ICEHOTEL this winter. Entitled ‘Mind the Gap’, the design features a tube station and train built from tonnes of snow and ice. View the picture gallery here. Watch the video news release here, and see the recent Metro article here.Marcus has created a piece of ‘notional art’ with a humorous twist:

“The art is in t
he notion, it represents the last stop on the Northern Line, questioning man's increasing urbanisation, juxtaposing an urban icon into a place on the edge of a vast Arctic wilderness”. When Marcus conceived the idea he was unaware of London Underground’s 150th Anniversary year: “It seemed serendipitous - an idea whose time had come.”

Transport for London has been enthusiastic in its support, and cited the suite as a highlight of London Underground's 150th anniversary celebrations. Marcus built the suite with fellow ice artist Swedish designer Magdalena Åkerström, who created the suite Ice Fishing in 2010/11, and who designed the 2012/13 ICEHOTEL art catalogue.

ICEHOTEL guests can sleep in the tube car at –5ºC. Serious sleeping bags are provided, and for the feint-hearted there are warm rooms nearby! You can fly direct from London via Discover The World. ICEHOTEL attracts artists from around the world, and Marcus is glad to bring a bit of iconic British design to a very international ‘party’.

Marcus has been directing for 25 years, including the Royal premiered cinema film, ‘The Troop’, and ‘Sir John Mill’s Moving Memories’ (BBC/Carlton). He has garnered over thirty international awards. Marcus’ credits are also pretty eclectic, he was also Associate Producer Music for the Athens 2004 Olympic Opening & Closing Ceremonies.

Marcus completed an ICEHOTEL suite previously, in winter 2010, assisted by Alina Palimaru. It was called ‘Frigid Dare’, and guests slept in a giant fridge with a gargantuan milk carton, a two-tonne ice egg rack, massive snow eggs, a lemon the size of a boulder, and an open sardine can for a bed, complete with cheese headboard! Marcus work in extreme environments is in partnership with leading suppliers, including: Bering Time (watches) Peli (protective cases) Canada Goose (clothing), Sorel (boots) and Fujifilm (cameras & lenses).
